Last Night’s Dancing With the Stars Went Full Mario

So… a few of you may or may not know this about me, but I am hopelessly addicted to Dancing With the Stars. I know, I know, shame on me, but I can’t help it. The dancing is so much fun to watch! Anyway, the point of this article isn’t to espouse my love for the show, but rather to share an amazing moment that occurred last night.

Alright, so here’s the set up. During the finals for the show, one couple’s dance style was chosen to be “freestyle.” That couple was Sadie Robertson, of Duck Dynasty fame, and Mark Ballas, professional dancer/singer/songwriter/musician. Mark’s been one of the professional dancers since season 5, and they are now in the 19th season. Anyway, for the finals, Mark and Sadie decided to go full crazy and went for a Mario themed freestyle. I don’t want to ruin it, so just watch the video above before reading the next paragraph.

I have to say, Sadie did a fantastic job of dancing. For only 17 years old, she was dancing like a pro, which is no surprise since she made it to the finals of the show. Also, the dance itself was fantastic. They got all of the original, classic Mario themes out of the way, and I can’t lie: I freakin’ loved it. My biggest complaint, however, is that they didn’t incorporate Duck Hunt at all into the dance. Sadie’s from Duck Dynasty, damn it! Why would they NOT include any reference to the light gun game that Super Mario Bros. came bundled with back in the day? It would have been the PERFECT reference. But no, they had to deny us. Why? Because they are pure evil.

Sadie and Mark received straight 10s from the judges, giving them a perfect judge score for that dance. Their previous dance, a samba to ‘Hunter’ by Pharrell Williams  earned them a 38, which means that by judges scores, they are second to the couple, Alfonso Ribeiro of ‘Fresh Prince’ fame, and professional dancer Whitney Carson for whom this is only the second season as a “professional” on the show. I’m of course rooting for Alfonso, because he totally broke out the Carlton, and I will forever love him for that. FOREVER.
