Watch Dogs Sales Pass 4 Million: Breaks Record for New IP

on

Today Ubisoft announced Watch_Dogs has set an ongoing sales record with more than 4 million copies sold globally in its first week, according to the NPD Group and GFK Group (both leading market research companies). This could possibly the best-selling new IP at launch in the industry. According to its internal estimates, Watch_Dogs is also the company’s best-selling week one game ever!

Despite reviews that were less-than stellar (an 82 on Metacritic), a general feeling among gamers that the game isn’t exactly what was promised, and a delay in release (it was originally supposed to launch Fall 2013), the game has still pulled through and is setting records. 4 million estimated sales for the first week is a great accomplishment, and it’ll be interesting to see what the official numbers are later this week.

The record was previously set by Rockstar’s L.A. Noire. Ubisoft’s best-selling game previously was Assassin’s Creed 3, however Watch_Dogs is on track to continue to top that record with 17% more sales. This very well could be due to the number of systems the game was sold on (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and PC respectively, with plans to release on the WiiU in Fall 2014). Watch_Dogs sold best on the PS4. Another deciding factor was most likely its show-stealing performance at E3 2012, and the hype for the game leading up to its release. Grand Theft Auto V continues to maintain its lead for selling the most game copies ever with 12 million units sold on its first day alone.

Of course, Watch_Dogs doesn’t look like it’s going to be a stand-alone game at all. The final scenes of the game hinted very strongly that Aiden Pearce would be back to continue the Watch_Dogs franchise some time in the future, however for now at least there are announced plans for a second game.

“The results we achieved in the first week of launch are amazing and prove Ubisoft’s commitment to developing new blockbuster IP and thoroughly new-gen experiences,” said Darren Bowen, UK Sales Director.
