Q&A With Nick Niewoudt: Novus Aeterno and the making of an MMORTS

Novus Aeterno, the upcoming game by indie developer TAITÁLE studios, is an incredibly ambitious title. The studio designed the game in one of the trickiest genres out there: the MMORTS. When I first heard of them, I was intrigued and couldn't wait to hear from the developers themselves about the game.

For those who are unfamiliar, an MMORTS is a Massively Multiplayer Online Real-Time Strategy game. In the past, AAA developers spent millions of dollars trying to create successful MMORTS, but never found success. Some shortcomings came from a lack of proper innovation. Too often the games took standard RTS mechanics and slapped an MMO style world on them without first answering some fundamental questions. For example, what happens when a player logs out? Does the player's land disappear? What about collecting resources, or placing new players near older players? There are some pretty tough balance issues that have always cropped up and have prevented this subgenre from growing.

What makes Novus Aeterno so unique then?  How do the developers address these issues and more? I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get Nick Niewoudt on chat earlier today. He and the rest of the development team are here in the States enjoying Boston after they attended PAX East. I won't give away the answers, so watch the video to find out more about the game!

I am incredibly thankful to Nick and TAITÁLE studios for the Q&A. The team working on the game couldn't be more awesome, and I wish them the best of luck. If you want to get early access to the game and help shape its future, go to the Novus Aeterno website and sign up for their Infiltrator Program which launches in three weeks.
