In today's digital age, it's unfortunate how console games are separate from PC games and how MMOs are confined in these lines. Well it would appear that CCP Games, the company that brings us EVE Online, is looking to blur that line. Dust 514 is coming and the latest Fanfest showed a trailer that showed how, in an ideal world their games would interact with each other.
What EVE Online is has already been established. It's an MMORPG in Space! CCP Games has created an entire in-game universe that is an incredible sandbox for players to mess around in. There are ships, drones, stations, and an amazingly huge world for us to play in. There are corporations, a vibrant in-game economy and so much for players to do. Dust 514 is an entirely different creature on its own. This is a planned console FPS that will be interacting with EVE Online as an MMO. Players can join a corporation, drop down onto planets and fight for the various resources. It uses the Unreal Engine 3 and the beta will be released this year on the Xbox360 PS3 (EDIT: As of 2011's E3 it has been announced that the beta will be available in late 2011 and it will be a PS3 exclusive).
The way Dust 514 is planned on interacting with EVE Online is significant. While the gameplay of this console FPS will be based around typical shooter-style gameplay, the results of the battles aren't just in exp/pride/gamescore/rank. Instead, the results of the battle will have a large effect on what resources a corporation can use and what planets/solar systems/regions the corporation has sovereignty over. Pretty cool, no?
This is perhaps the future of MMOs. By that I mean that if Dust 514 works out as planned, MMOs won't work in their own singular worlds separate from each other based on consoles and PC. We will soon find games that can affect each other while they are played simultaneously. CCP Games should be applauded for taking the stage in allowing for a truly unique experience that I will certainly be obtaining on launch day whenever that is.
Here's a good trailer to show how these games are planned to work together.
COD was once gr8 but has been run into the mud a bit too far. The series is now shit, and has been shit since Black ops. Besides I like Killzone 2,3,Resistance 1-3, Bulletstorm, Vanquish, UT3, Gears 1-3. The COD kilelr has arrived. It's Dust 514 available only on PS3 .
